A Note About Meagan Kieffer

The subject of my work revolves around images of or related to the horse. It is a response to my past as well as the past or history of the horse itself. I grew up on a ranch where horses were a part of everyday life. Grooming them became and hour of study rather than a chore. I began to study at first the way in which they were put together; the way in which the backbone connected to the scapula, hips and ribs. This led to a more intense study of motion. Not only could I see the way in which the muscles moved beneath the skin, I could feel it as well. Their mannerisms also became a subject of my study as I watched them in the pasture. I portray horses in clay for one main reason. Clay is tactile. It can be held, touched and formed with the bare hands. As my hand conforms to the contour of the horses' bones and muscles, so does the clay to my hand.

Meagan graduated from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. She currently teaches in Smithville, Tennessee. Her work has been shown in many collections including: The Archie Bray Foundation, Helena, MT; Holter Museum of Art, Helena, MT; Private Collections of Nebraska, Montana, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina.
